MAINTENANCE
It’s simple: if you don’t take consistent care of your car, clean it every now and then, do check-ups on it, it will eventually show on the car.
The same goes for you: if you don’t put effort into taking care of yourself, you won’t be glowing. We shower to maintain good hygiene and health. We eat healthy food so that it clears out toxins from our bodies. We brush our teeth every morning and night.
That's maintenance work.
What Maintenance Work Does THAT Girl Have?
Maintenance 1: Skincare
She takes good care of her skin. She has a skincare routine that she follows. This is something that took me a WHILE to stay consistent with, especially because I was trying too many things and seeing what my skin likes and what my skin doesn’t like. Only NOW do I feel like I found the best-fitting skincare for my skin… which I can write another blog about in the near future.
Maintenance 2: Looks & Confidence
She takes good care of her looks, not in a superficial way at all. But let's be real: you perform better when you feel confident in yourself, when you have clothes that fit you well, colors that complement your skin tone, and maybe a specific perfume you like wearing.
For me, I like to get ready once a day and for all. After I do my skincare, I apply sunscreen as the last product, and then once it’s absorbed, I apply a bit of blush and tinted lip balm. That’s the base I apply whether I want to leave the house or not. It’s barely anything, but it makes me feel so good, girly, cutesy, and everything…
Maintenance 3: Clothes & Hygiene
She takes good care of her clothes. She doesn’t wear wrinkled clothes, dirty clothes, or old torn clothes. Most importantly, she doesn’t spray perfume over bad-smelling clothes. Now I know some people STRUGGLE with sweating problems. I will have another blog about specific products I love for this, but the basic is: as soon as your clothes start smelling, please wash them and don’t spray perfume over them. It just smells bad, and that’s not us.
Maintenance 4: Joyful Rituals
Having a ritual that brings her joy, INTENTIONALLY doing it. I’m a huge morning person, and if I don’t have a good morning, I sometimes find it hard to be as happy that day. I hate waking up stressed. So I try to have quality sleep, and I get excited because I love enjoying my mornings. I look from my window while sipping matcha I make for myself, life is great. I just find myself looking outside and let my thoughts do the rest.
It doesn’t have to be this exact thing; it can be anything. It can be doing your nails while your candles are on every Sunday, enjoying self-care nights, showers, reading, painting, drawing, whatever it is… something that keeps you off the phone and present in the NOW.
Cause seriously: if you struggle staying alone for a few hours without your phone, pretty lady, we have a pretty big problem here. By the way, one thing on my list for my next vision board is spending 2 weeks without my phone at all. I think it’ll be fun, and I’m sure it’ll feel weird and new, but we’ll see how that goes.
Maintenance 5: Check-Ins
Check-ins. Now this is about getting your shit together. I used to love doing it whenever I felt like it, maybe once or twice every two months or a few weeks. I’d sit down with pen and notebook and write down everything that needs organizing, any thoughts bothering me, and then think of solutions for each thing.
Now I have that in my system. I do these check-in meetings every Sunday. It’s nice to have it in my system because it keeps me detoxed for the whole week… Sunday is (mostly) the only day in the week where I have to make decisions. The rest of the days are actions or just living and enjoying life intentionally.
I’m a big fan of regular check-ins. Some people have therapists, which is honestly very great; other people have life coaches, which is also very great. But many struggle to find a good one or one they can feel safe with. So trust me, you can also do that yourself. The key: face every feeling you have and ask yourself as many “why do I feel…” questions as possible. It’s a great self-reflection tip, trust me.
Maintenance 6: Water & Food
Water and good food.
I think of it this way: food is something great, and I’m very grateful that I have taste buds and can really enjoy some tastes. But the main reason I eat is to keep functioning. We all know that whatever food you eat is gonna leave your body afterwards. Food and water are our fuel. When I remember that food is fuel, and luckily I can enjoy tasting it sometimes, it gets easy to control what I eat. I was overweight and struggled with binge eating when I was a teenager, so trust me, I know what I’m talking about. Take good care of your fuel, the better fuel you put into you, the overall better you function. Period.
You might not grasp how important it is, but let me illustrate it with the butterfly effect:
You take care of your food → you feel healthy → you look better → you feel in a good mood → you think positively → you want to perform better → you DO perform better → you gain confidence → you see things objectively → when you want to better yourself, you do it out of a place of clarity and not overwhelming stress.
Let’s now do the opposite scenario:
You eat bad food → you feel bad → it shows on your body and skin → you lose confidence → you blame yourself for eating bad food → you cover the blaming by eating more of it → it becomes the only problem you think about → you don’t pay attention to other responsibilities → you might distance yourself from people and situations → you are unable to be productive and end up self-blaming.
Think about why we eat good food. It’s not just to be healthy, it’s so we can live, function, perform, radiate love and good energy, and show affection that people deserve, instead of letting it be based on our bad mood. It’s all about feeling at peace, and good food and water are the main fuel.
Maintenance 7: Novelty & New Experiences
Humans like novelty. We find joy in new things, new places, new people, new experiences… Why don’t we do that intentionally? Go out and experience new things every once in a while.
Life isn’t just hustling, creating, working, and achieving… it’s about being able to be present and try new things at times. It’s like pressing restart on your mental system. It’s like adding spices to food. Are spices THAT important for food? Well, they are good for enjoying the food, yes, because I doubt you’d enjoy an unseasoned chicken. So experiencing new things is just as important as spices in a meal. Without spices, it’s difficult to enjoy the meal. Spices are tiny and small, but adding them makes a HUGE difference.
Now, there are a lot more tips and things to do to help you feel constantly at peace and relaxed. Trust me, I wish this for you. There is nothing better than feeling peace… I hope I can help you reach that, pretty lady.
